Issue 21-3 features 46 farming ideas to help cut costs ad raise productivity

Min-till drills
We feature no less than three designs, all drilling more than 100 acres a day.
* The first is mounted, occasionally used directly into stubble, but mostly after a single pass with a home adapted 5 leg cultivator.
* The second is an adapted 8m Simba Free-Flow fitted with Horsch parts and a home designed and built steel coulter. Drill to be extended to 10m, for farm controlled traffic
* The third is a converted Discadon used for rape seeding. Machine applies liquid fertiliser and pellets as well as seed

Firewood ideas
* Log Splitter: Unique 'radial' design, made from scrap parts, works better than the standard push machine.
* Guillotine: Cuts up to 10ins, no sawing, fast action, and machine converts into a splitter
* Saw horse: Stack up logs, holds them for easy chainsaw logging

Grain trailer used as batch drier
With a batch of 17% beans which needed drying without becoming damaged as they would in an Opico, Mr Bradley adapted an old trailer to suck hot air through the load. Once finished the beans were down to 14% in four hours. The article describes the adaptation in reasonable details.

Rat baiter
This home made baiter reduces waste, keeps bait fresh, and is attractive to rats

36m spray boom opens either side
With one side folded and the other extended you can drive around the field edge and spray accurately into the centre. Strong boom weighs less than 2 tons

Home built rubber cutter
A home built power tool, made from bits and pieces of other tools, cuts conveyor belting, rubber blocks etc like bacon.

Diesel monitor
A simple effective system which tells you where the red diesel goes - a no-brainer management aid

Front tractor weights
* Heavy adjustable: frame carries standard removable weights plus a unique 1 ton lead weight
* Two and a half ton: big weight for a big tractor, designed for minimal obstruction and overhand. Has built in tool box.

Cattle handling

Designed around motorway barriers, with circular forcing pen, parallel raceway, weigh crush and holding pens
